Orchestral Etiquette and Rehearsal Expectations

 

At the Northern Beaches Orchestra, we strive to create a welcoming, respectful and enjoyable environment where musicians of all experience levels can perform at their best. The following guidelines help rehearsals run smoothly and ensure everyone gets the most from their time with the orchestra.

We value preparation, punctuality and respect - but we also value enjoyment. Rehearsals should be productive, inclusive and fun.

Before Rehearsal

​

Arrive on Time

Please aim to arrive at least 10-15 minutes before the scheduled start time. This allows enough time to set up your instrument, organise your music and be ready to play when rehearsal begins.

Come Prepared

• Bring all required music and equipment.

• Mark practice notes and bowings in your part as needed.

• Familiarise yourself with the repertoire between rehearsals where possible.

• Bring a pencil to every rehearsal.

Notify Absences

If you are unable to attend a rehearsal or performance, please notify northern.beaches.orchestra@gmail.com or your section leader as early as possible.

During Rehearsal

​

Respect the Conductor

When the conductor is speaking:

• Stop playing immediately.

• Avoid private conversations.

• Give your full attention so instructions do not need to be repeated.

Keep Talking to a Minimum

A friendly atmosphere is important, but side conversations can make it difficult for others to hear instructions and slow rehearsal progress.

Mark Your Part

Use a pencil to mark bowings, dynamics, rehearsal notes and instructions during rehearsal.

​

Be Ready to Play

Have your instrument, music and accessories organised so that rehearsal time is used efficiently.

Phones and Devices

Please silence phones and smart devices before rehearsal begins. Do not check messages while the conductor works with other sections.​

Working Together

​

Respect Fellow Musicians

Treat all members with courtesy and respect regardless of age, background or experience level.

​

Support Your Section

Follow agreed bowings, articulations and section decisions. Consistency within a section helps create a unified ensemble sound.

Create a Positive Environment

Constructive feedback should come through section leaders and conductors. Encourage fellow musicians and contribute to a welcoming atmosphere.

Concert Etiquette

​

Dress Requirements

Follow any concert dress instructions provided for the performance.

​

Be Early

Performance days often involve setup, warm-up and logistical requirements. Arrive by the advised call time.

​

On Stage

• Enter and leave the stage professionally.

• Avoid unnecessary conversation.

• Remain attentive throughout the performance.

• Acknowledge applause appropriately when directed.

Between Pieces

Avoid talking, packing away equipment or leaving the stage unless instructed. The audience's experience extends beyond the final note.

A Note for New Members

​

Every orchestra has its own traditions and practices. If you are unsure about anything - from rehearsal procedures to concert dress or bowings - please ask your section leader or a committee member. We are always happy to help.
